My love of ICE is no secret. There was literally nothing else like it at the time; sorry, CD Review fans. Another really cool magazine I subscribed to in the late Eighties and early Nineties was Rock & Roll Disc. Tom Graves began publishing America's Best CD Publication back in 1987 and it lasted a good five years before ceasing publication in 1992. I probably subscribed for four of those years and while I haven't finished going through the boxes of paper archives that have sat in my garage since we moved here to The Hideaway in 2000, I did find one issue of Rock & Roll Disc just last week. If you do a search, not much comes up image-wise for the magazine: There is an early issue from 1987/1988 - the fourth issue actually, back when it was a newspaper, on a Zappa fan site. (The slick-covered magazine format debuted with the June 1991 issue.) There are no issues listed for sale on eBay as I type this (though Google tells me there have been issues and lots featured before) which makes me kind of sad cause unearthing this one issue has made me a little giddy and I would like to feel even more giddy, ya know?
Articles, interviews and reviews originally printed in Rock & Roll Disc have been reprinted in books by Graves and archived on his original blog as well as the paysite Rock's Backpages. While Tom Graves wrote a lot of content for the magazine, he also attracted other critics and writers as seen in the list below:
