NOW 58 [US] + NOW BROADWAY [US]

On April 29th, Now That's What I Call Music! 58 will be released here in the States. For those of you playing along at home, NOW 58 was released in the UK way back in the Summer of 2004 when NOW 16 was released in the US; this Summer, Now That's What I Call Music! 94 will most likely be released if the established pattern of releases (March, July and November) over the past thirty-three years holds. Back here at home, the US version of  NOW 58 will come out with 16 chart hits (including two former Number Ones) and six What's Next tracks. There is one song among the twenty-two tracks I would like to hear again on the album, and that song is featured below along with the inspiration for the hook, another song which coincidentally appeared on NOW 14 back in 2003.

You may not know this about your host but he has never attended a Broadway play or even an Off Broadway play. I was stage manager for our 8th grade play in school and had a phenomenal time playing spin the bottle at the wrap party though so I feel more than qualified to speak on matters of The Great White Way. Plus I've stayed awake through some of the film adaptations, soooooooo... Also on April 29th, the US arm of Now That's What I Call Music! will be releasing Now That's What I Call Broadway, featuring eighteen of The Biggest Broadway Hits on One Album! featuring:

Interestingly enough, the UK arm of Now That's What I Call Music! has already issued two double disc sets similar to NOW Broadway titled Now That's What I Call Musicals. The first one was released in November 2012 and the second one in November 2014. In addition to featuring songs from original cast recordings and revivals of both Broadway and West End productions, both collections also contain songs from movie and television soundtracks. The first one below, the 2012 version, has 40 tracks while the second one from 2014, has but 39 tracks. There is a lot of common songs between the two sets though some of the singers are different but I suppose that the huge circle of NOW fans who are also Glee fans with discretionary income bought both sets without blinking.

  1. Let's take a look at the US album that claims "Broadway" in the title. Therefore, I expect original works written for the US stage.

Seasons of Love - Rent ✔ (Broadway 1996, movie 2005)
Defying Gravity - Wicked ✔ (Broadway 2003 based on 1995 book)
All That Jazz - Chicago ✔ (Broadway 1975, movie 2002)
On the Balcony/Don't Cry For Me Argentina - Evita ✘ (original album 1976, London production 1978, Broadway 1979, movie 1996)
The Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera ✘ (London production 1986 based on 1910 book, Broadway 1988, movie 2004)
    Memory - Cats ✘ (London production 1981, Broadway 1982)
    I Dreamed A Dream - Les Misérables ✘ (Paris production 1980 based on 1862 book, Broadway 1987, movie 2012)
    And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going - Dreamgirls ✔ (Broadway 1981, movie 2006)
Ease On Down the Road - The Wiz ✔ (Broadway 1975, movie 1978)
Sherry - Jersey Boys ✘ (Original Four Seasons single 1962, "jukebox" musical on Broadway 2005, movie 2014)
Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now - Hairspray ✔ (Broadway 2002 based on 1988 non-musical film version, musical film version 2007)
Mamma Mia - Mamma Mia! ✘ (Original ABBA single 1975, "jukebox" musical in London 1999, Broadway 2001, movie 2008)
Will You Love Me Tomorrow - Beautiful ✘ (Original Shirelles single 1960, "jukebox" musical on Broadway 2014)
    Tomorrow - Annie ✔ (Broadway 1977 based on 1924 comic strip, musical film versions 1982, 1999, 2014)
When I Grow Up - Matilda ✘ (London production 2011 based on 1988 book, Broadway 2013)
Circle of Life - The Lion King ✘ (movie 1994, Broadway 1997)
Finale: Children will Listen - Into the Woods ✔ (Broadway 1987, movie 2014)
    One - A Chorus Line ✔ (Broadway 1975, movie 1985)

Final score 9 of 18. Batting .500 will put you in the Baseball Hall of Fame, but this ain't baseball. However, I will concede that all the songs have appeared on Broadway, so the title isn't misleading.

Personally, I've seen The Lion King and Mamma Mia! on Broadway; touring versions of Phantom of the Opera, Les Miz, Rent, and Cats; and a high school production of Into the Woods. I've seen most of the film adaptations, the best of which was Evita.
