KTKT, 990 on the AM dial, was the top-rated station in Tucson for twenty years, from the time Frank Kalil launched the Color Radio Top 40 format in 1957 until FM radio rose to prominence in 1977. In researching the 1978 Hideaway 100, I came across the best example of a radio station tribute site, I've yet o encounter - the great KTKT tribute site, KTKT99.COM (WARNING! A vintage station ID sound clip will greet you at maximum volume), which is the source of all the scans in today's post.
In 1978, KTKT was the Tucson affiliate of American Top 40, broadcasting it on Sunday nights though on the back of the survey (right) from April 4, 1978, Casey Kasem's name was misspelled. By October 1978, the American Top 40 three-hour weekly countdown show was expanded to four hours and Kasem's name was still not corrected on the station's weekly survey (below left), though it was a different misspelling from the previous one.
Among the concerts KTKT featured on the back of their weekly surveys were WAR; Hall & Oates with opening act City Boy of Mutt Lange-produced "5.7.0.5" fame; Yvonne Elliman and Santa Esmeralda; The Beach Boys; Yes with opening acts Johnny Winter and Ace; and Heart with special guest Firefall. KTKT alternatley billed itself as The Concert Connection and THE Station With The Concerts.

It's a beautiful day here in the Old Pueblo so me and the dudes are going to count down KTKT's Top 99 of 1978 from the KTKT Super Van in the El Con Mall west parking lot, by Levy's. I mean Wal-Mart.
