HERC never bothered to buy any of the Record Research books devoted to the Bubbling Under The Hot 100 charts (above), songs that completely and totally missed the venerable Hot 100 chart. He had picked up Music Yearbooks and glanced at the list of also-rans and the songs that missed the Bigs, but it wasn't until a few years ago when HERC acquired the 8th edition of Whitburn's new super-sized Pop Annual (below) which featured complete Bubbling Under The Hot 100 Chart for the first time, that he began to examine the consolation charts in more depth.
What he found was that quite a few of his favorite songs had languished beneath the Hot 100 despite going Top 10 or even #1 on other charts. Breaking it down even further, HERC singled out the Bubbling Under songs that peaked during the Summer months (late May though early September) during the years 1982-1985 and made a Summer Bubblers playlist that he fully intended to publish last Summer - check the Added field in Spotify to see when HERC created the playlist.
To a "Miami Vice" nut like me, Russ Ballard's "Voices" is one of the most memorable song cues ever used on the show. No coincidence then, that it's also one of my favorite Rock songs of the '80s... An unjustly overlooked classic!
