TV Tuesday S01E08: LIFE ON MARS

From HERC's previous post about Ashes To Ashes:
In 2006, the BBC premiered Life On Mars, a show about Sam Tyler, a police detective who is in a near fatal car crash in 2006 and comes to in 1973.  The show ran for two eight episode seasons and was even adapted into a ill-fated U.S. version (which lasted a single season) as well as a Spanish series (La Chica de Ayer.)  HERC enjoyed the series immensely and especially the 70s Brit-centric songs that filled the soundtrack - each episode averaged about seven songs - and one CD was officially released.  The series takes its title from the David Bowie song of the same name - it is the song playing on his iPod when he crashes.

It lasted for sixteen episodes spread across two seasons and spawned not only Ashes To Ashes but an Americanized version starring Harvey Keitel as "Gene Hunt", Sam's immediate superior officer, ran for one season of seventeen episodes.  Unlike most series, that one had the luxury of knowing somewhat in advance that it would be cancelled so the show runners were able to bring closure to the story.  HERC likes and owns all three shows on shiny digital discs so he can watch them as the whim strikes.  There's really not much else that can be said of the shows without spoiling key plot points within them so watch the series by any means necessary.

Lee Harris was the music advisor for the original series and he continued on in that capacity for Ashes To Ashes.  The music he chose is 1969-1973 British blues rock and glam rock with a few odd songs from other eras - HERC did not include those (space) oddities in the playlist below EXCEPT for one track he considers timeless.  [Can guess which one?]  The music supervisor for the US series was the Alexandra Patsavas, a long-time favorite of HERC's.  Before we get to the music from both the domestic and import versions of the series, here's the ABC trailer.
