From the enticing promise of the opening line ("Two girls for every boy!" later upgraded to "Two swingin' honeys for every guy!"), "Surf City" is every non-surfer's dream of what living the surfin' life is all about. Filled with hip lingo and vivid imagery (did HERC mention the honeys?), Jan & Dean (working from a scrap of a song by Beach Boy buddy Brian Wilson) took "Surf City" all the way to the top of the Hot 100, becoming the first surf-themed #1 in the process. Though they may not be as well-known as The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean deserve to be more popular. Almost their entire recorded output was made for Summer.
