Have you ever heard a song and wished you knew all the words?
That is a slogan from a subscription ad for Song Hits magazine, and it lays out the magazine's raison d'ĂȘtre. Today, we're featuring the September 1978 issue of Song Hits, volume 42, issue 151. Despite the fading text on the cover and the print bleed throughout, this has to be one of the better condition issues in my collection. The cover features pictures of Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, and Denny Laine; the three of them were Wings in 1978. While the cover promises Words To Over 80 Hit Songs, I did not verify the chart placement of each song to certify "hit" status. I did count the songs and can confirm that there are indeed lyrics to over 80 different songs:
- 32 pop songs
- 24 soul songs
- 37 country songs
Wings are featured as Pop Star Of The Month with a three-page spread written by Dave Gelly about the recording of the band's album, London Town. Carly Simon is also a Pop Star Of The Month with a two-page layout. Heatwave garners two pages of its own as the Soul Star Of The Month, while Barbara Fairchild has a two-page spotlight as the Country Star Of The Month. Here are six 45s from our collection whose lyrics are featured in this issue.
