NOW Yearbook: Vault '83 [2024]

The first NOW Yearbook covered charted songs in the UK from 1983. The eighty songs on NOW Yearbook '83 were followed by sixty
additional songs on NOW Yearbook Extra '83, released a few months later. A year later, seventeen more songs from 1983 were included on NOW Yearbook '80-'84: The Final Chapter, while ten more 1983 songs were released on NOW Yearbook Extra '80-'84: The Final Chapter. That makes 167 mostly UK-charted songs from 1983 included on four NOW Yearbook releases through early 2024. Then, on the last day of May 2024, NOW Yearbook Vault '83 was released with another eighty songs, bringing the NOW Yearbook total from 1983 up to 247 songs! Here are my favorite tracks from NOW Yearbook Vault '83. Spoiler alert! There are some slim pickings among the first three discs, but CD Four is a solid representation of the US charts in 1983.
The four singles whose picture sleeves appear above are our favorites from the sixty songs featured on discs 1-3 of NOW Vault '83. Freur's "Doot Doot" shouldn't be as good as it sounds to us, but we cannot deny its early synth-poppy charms. Wall Of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" is a silly, fun tune we have always thought of as a 1982 tune. We love Stan Ridgway's vocals and the quirky backing track. Never fails to stir memories of the Fridays! skits with Bruce Mahler as a Mexican DJ. There is a hazy, dreamy vibe to Men At Work's "Overkill" that we will never tire of hearing. Vocalist Colin Hay does a killer solo acoustic version of the track, and our friend RhythmScholar has a great extended remix of the track he calls the Night Moves Remix. Another 1982 track (in our heads) is Lionel Richie's "You Are", which has always sounded like the little brother to "Lady (You Bring Me Up)". The latter song was not written by Richie, yet both songs still sound very similar to these ears.
NOW Vault '83 discs 1-3 score: 6.67
The sleeves pictured above represent the twenty tracks found on CD Four of NOW Vault '83, with all twenty being favorites. These songs are a decent representation of what we were listening to in 1983, though the lack of R&B, rap, and harder rock is noticeable. Still, CD Four is an exceptional disc among NOW Yearbooks. It's a great listen from start to finish. Curious if future fourth discs of NOW Vault sets will be similarly heavy with U.S. tracks. Fingers crossed.
NOW Vault '83 disc 4 score: 100.00
I was initially skeptical of the NOW Yearbook Vault series when it was announced, thinking that it truly would be scraping the bottom of the barrel. In my defense, that's exactly what it did for the first three discs and fifty-six of those sixty tracks. But then the glorious CD Four began playing, and I was pleasantly surprised. Strike that... I was filled with joy, humming along to every song. It would be fair to say that the disc made my day, or more accurately, my early evening around sunset. More Now Yearbook Vault discs, please.
