Time-Life's SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES - Part VII 1995-1996

While it seemed like the Sounds Of The Seventies series from Time-Life was over and done in 1994 after thirty-eight discs, an additional disc in the series was released in 1995, followed by three more discs in 1996. Click HERE to read about those first thirty-eight discs and the alternate versions that exist. Read on to learn about the next four discs.

Pop Nuggets: Late '70s is disc 39 in Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies series. The disc contains twenty tracks from 1972 to 1979, though that 1972 track is the belatedly popular "Amie", which was released in 1975. There are an unprecedented eleven Number One songs laced throughout the tracklist. All but "Amie", which peaked at number 27, are Top 10 hits. The disc is a great addition to the series, filling in a few key songs, although it does repeat a few songs from previous discs in the series as well. As a later release, Pop Nuggets: Late '70s is rarer than other discs in the series and highly desirable by collectors, driving up the price.

Disc 40 in the Sounds Of The Seventies collection is simply titled TV Themes. The disc has twenty theme songs from Seventies television shows, some of which have already appeared on other discs in the series. There are two Number One songs on the disc: Rhythm Heritage's "Theme from S.W.A.T." and John Sebastian's "Welcome Back".
At some point, the disc was retitled TV Themes of the '70s, given new artwork as part of a triple-disc set including TV Themes of the '60s and TV Themes of the '80s, though the three discs were available separately as well. The '60s disc is also part of Time-Life's AM Gold series, while the '80s disc is part of the Sounds Of The Eighties series from Time-Life Music.

Pop Nuggets: Early '70s is the forty-first disc in the Sounds Of The Seventies series. With twenty tracks from 1970 to 1975, including a few songs previously featured on other discs in the series. Chartwise, all songs are Top 10s, with eight Number Ones. This one plays more like a One-Hit Wonder type disc than Pop Nuggets: Late '70s disc. While it doesn't fetch as much as that Pop Nuggets: Late '70s disc, it still goes for more than most Sounds Of The Seventies discs on the secondary market.

Disc 42 in Time-Life Music's Sounds Of The Seventies series is A Loss For Words. The disc has twenty instrumentals from the decade, including four Number Ones and two tracks that missed the Top 40. This one is a rough listen for me - I like most of the songs, but hearing them all in one sitting is uncomfortable. As the last disc in the series, A Loss For Words is rare and therefore expensive compared to the run-of-the-mill Sounds Of The Seventies discs.

We had subscribed to Sounds Of The Eighties in 1994, at the apparent end of the Sounds Of The Seventies collection. By the end of 1996, there were already nineteen discs from the new series sitting on our shelf. The Seventies had run its course - long live the Eighties!
