With this post, HERC begins the countdown of the final 10 volumes of Backbeats. Not the final ten volumes of the series mind you but the last ten volumes of the series HERC hasn't already covered. For the dozens of you playing along at home, you should already have the following thirty-two volumes scratched off your card: 1-21, 24, 26, 29-33, 37 and 40-42. If you missed any of those, hit this LINK to find them and get caught up.
Many of the songs on What's The Word are album cuts or B-sides from 1970-1972. The Invictus label is represented more than any other though Philadelphia International Records does appear twice, with cuts from 1977 and 1979. This disc is by no means a happy or fun or even a casual listen though it is essential in the overall understanding of the music of the time. Of the sixteen tracks on Volume 22 of the Backbeats series, only seven are currently licensed on Spotify. To offset that imbalance, HERC drew upon several sources to compile a brief, accompanying playlist of songs in the same spirit though with a slightly higher profile.
