Summer Smoothie: Daft Punk's RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES [2013]

Yes, Daft Punk is playing at HERC's house.  Hello and welcome to the inaugural post in HERC's Summer Smoothie Recipe series.  Tune in often over the next few months to read unique reviews of Summer music.  Let's start blending...

If you can overcome the deafening hype that's been building over the past 30 days, if you can overlook any preconceived notions you may have based on Daft Punk's prior music and if you can play this album on a warm night beneath a blanket of stars, you may have found your soundtrack for the Summer.  Maybe not on first blush but after a couple of listens.  This is an album that begs to be listened to all the way through.

HERC declared the album's first single "Get Lucky" the Song Of Summer 2013 back when it was released in mid-April and now, more than a month later, it's still being blasted quite regularly in The Blueberry.  The track even set a record for most single-day streams on Spotify in both the USA and the UK.  The song is equal parts soothing and grooving, just what the doctor ordered after the scorching Summer heat here at The Hideaway.  It all started with this teaser during an episode of Saturday Night Live - and yes, HERC still watches that show:

For those (few) of you who have been blissfully unaware of the album, it has been streaming on various sites for more than a week now and today (5/21) is the official digital/physical release date.  There are a slew of album reviews - most of them overwhelmingly positive - out there in the blogosphere so in lieu of an actual album review, here's HERC's Smoothie Recipe for Daft Punk's Random Access Memories:

If you're like HERC's blog buddy Martin <<his BLOG>> and have never listened to Daft Punk, here are a few previous Daft Punk songs (along with their official music videos) you may have unwittingly heard:

The new album Random Access Memories is notable for the assortment of collaborators who helped the two robots realize their dream.  The series of videos below tell their story.
