The Carrie Diaries [HERC's Mix]

HERC took a chance and watched "The Carrie Diaries" last night.  It wasn't as bad as he thought it was going to be (which seems to be the unanimous refrain from critics) nor was the music as clichéd as it usually is in 1980s themed shows and movies.  Longtime DEVO-tee HERC's favorite Mark Mothersbaugh scores the series and, not surprisingly, that other HERC favorite - Alexandra Patsavas - serves as the show's music supervisor.  Check out an interview with her HERE.  Or watch the pilot episode on CW's site HERE.
It is somewhat ironical coincidental that Sarah Jessica Parker, who portrayed the much older "Carrie Bradshaw" in a long-running television series and two movies, starred in a short-lived 1984 show of her own (above video) when she was actually sxiteen.  For the record, the actress playing the sixteen year old titular character in "The Carrie Diaries", AnnaSophia Robb, was born in December 1993.

Hopefully musical genius Patsavas (pictured above) did not front-load the series pilot with music as tends to be the case with a lot of premiere episodes.  Her musical choices show a sense of reverence, even first-hand knowledge/experience as Ms. Patsavas (like HERC) was a teen during the Eighties, with time-honored classics as well as whimsy and tribute with her selection of cover versions of songs originally from the time period the series is set, specifically 1984.  The pool of songs Patsavas can draw from is fairly large with even more covers being released regularly plus she has the respect and influence to commission still more covers from both up and coming artists as well as established favorites.

HERC was not the first to create a Spotify playlist based on the show's soundtrack - that honor goes to publishing magnate Kyle M. Menard who posted a brief review with his playlist HERE on Blink.  There are also other Carrie Diaries playlists apparently inspired by the book the show is based on.

Relive the musical moments from the show all season long with HERC's more thorough (thanks, SoundHound!) Spotify playlist below.

Like all of his playlists, HERC will care for and feed this playlist as needed until he is physically unable to do so.
