SUMMER PLAYLISTICLE: The Rolling Stone Hot 40 [1998]

In the Special Double Issue of Summer 1998, Rolling Stone #790/791, one of HERC's favorite scribes, Rob Sheffield, wrote a feature entitled The Rolling Stone Hot 40 - The Greatest Summer Songs Of All Time.  Music Editor Joe Levy explained the chronological list's rules and guidelines:
"...not just songs that hit big in the summer months, but songs that defined the season itself - songs that made you sweat and mentioned sweat.  This made it easier to edit down the list of more than 500 songs submitted by ROLLING STONE's editors and writers..."

Songs from 1958-1997 populate the list, with the decade of the Sixties dominating the list with 17 songs and the year 1966 leading all other years with 6 entries.  As far as artists, several have two tracks apiece on the list: Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Beach Boys, Madonna and The Rolling Stones.
